Over 90% of tourists that visit Antarctica go through the quickest route, which is traveling from the tip of South America.

In most situations, sailing is a way to reach Antarctica. This route still remains the most used and common route. Visitors begin the journey late in the afternoon, and they spend the next two days crossing the Drake Passage which is a fairly notorious body of water

Another route to get to Antarctica is via a short 2-hour flight from Punta Arenas, Chile, to the South Shetland Islands. Also, going by air has a higher risk of delays due to the rapidly changing climatic conditions.

One of the several routes to travel to Antarctica is through the classic peninsula voyage. The traveling actually has to be made on the water. You will have to go through the most western part of the world -Ushuaia city in Argentina.

After this location, you head on to the Drake Passage, then South Shetland Island, and of which there are few locations you can stopover. Then you make your journey through to the Antarctic Peninsula. This is a journey that will take more than a week but two weeks at its Max, depending on the means of transportation.

This is a recommended route for any beginner. However, there are more routes that can be taken to Antarctica. Another route is through Antarctica's Ross Sea, from New Zealand. Not many ships take this route. If you consider traveling to Antarctica through the Ross Sea, then it is very important to make sure that the weather is favorable.

The ship to be used also has its determinant in how the journey is going to be. Taking this route to Antarctica will take about a month.

The easiest way to travel to Antarctica is to book onto a cruise with a reputable company. That way, your flight and accommodation will be taken care of and you will be kept safe in a region where it is dangerous to be alone. The temperatures require special clothing, and special care about time spent out of a heated building.

However, if you are especially adventurous, it is possible to travel to Antarctica on a yacht. This option is more for specialist yachtsmen than your average tourist. The waters are treacherous and require exceptional sailing skill.

Aternatively, if you want to rough it - go on a ship resupplying the region. These ships are French and therefore arrangements have to be made with French authorities. The ship leaves from Réunion and the round-trip takes around a month. You could take a fly-over, but you probably want to experience the region near to. All else failing, sign up to a research station and work for the scientists, as a chef, perhaps.
