Satire is a common genre seen in literature. The main purpose of using satire as a work of literature is to make fun of something. The thing that is being made fun of can be a character or the topic that is being discussed. Two elements commonly seen in satire are irony and sarcasm.

The word satire is Latin. It means full but the meaning changed to mean a medley or variety. The word satire came from the Latin origin and eventually changed to become satire.

Most likely, the word satire came during the 16th or 17th century based on the writings that were written during that time period. Other works that date before the 16th century do not have or mention satire so that is why it is believed that it began in the 16th century.
