There are 10 major types of clouds. Aside from the famous cirrus, stratus, cumulus, and nimbus clouds, there are also altocumulus, altostratus, cirrocumulus, cirrostratus, cumulonimbus, nimbostratus, and stratocumulus. The additional six types are combinations of the first 4 cloud types as there are days that the skies are not filled with pure cumulus clouds.

These are also classified depending on their height. Cirrus, cirrostratus, and cirrocumulus form the High clouds group (20, 000 ft. and higher), the altostratus and altocumulus clouds are in the Middle clouds (6,500 ft. 20, 000 ft.), and stratus, stratocumulus. The Low clouds (6,500 feet below) are stratus, stratocumulus, and nimbostratus and the clouds with vertical development are cumulus and cumulonimbus.
