Metis is the closest moon to Jupiter. It orbits 128,000 km (79,500 miles) from Jupiter. It is the closest of the Galilean moons. Its moon distance from Jupiter is 422,000 km (220,000 miles). As of 2011, there are 67 known moons of Jupiter.

The moons of Jupiter are large and fairly spherical, which indicates that they may have formed around the planet during the creation of the solar system. Fifty of the moons received names, and seventeen have temporary designations based upon the determination of their precise orbits.
