Mercury is known for having a lot of iron. This iron-rich planet probably has the most iron compared to all of the other planets in the system. Mercury has many similarities in its make-up compared to Earth. Like Earth, it has a crust, mantle and core.

However, Mercury’s core is much larger in comparison to Earth’s core and compared to their crust and mantle. Mercury’s big core is made of iron which is why it is considered to have so much iron. To show you how big Mercury’s core is, Earth’s core is about half of its make-up whereas Mercury’s core is about 85% of its make-up. With such a large core and it being such a small planet, this shows why it is known as the iron planet.
