Mineral deposits are mined by geologists using open surface mining if the ores are not deep. Ores that are deep need underground methods which is much more expensive involving large machinery for bringing the rock to the surface.
Then situ mining, such as when mining uranium, involves dissolving it in place then processing it at the surface. This means the rock doesn't have to be lifted from the ground.
