Carbon 14 is a radioactive isotope present in most organic samples. It is often used for radioactive dating. This is because it has a half life of 5743 years which means that it can assess the age of the specimen up to 75 years very easily.

If the specimen dates back more than this time we take different isotopes such as the potassium 40 isotope. It has a half life of 1.25 billion years which meabs it can assess the age of the specimen dating back a long time.
