The biggest controversy surrounding Charlie Chaplin initially happened during the United States anti-Communist propaganda era. Along with about 300 other Hollywood stars, artists, musicians, and writers, Chaplin was labeled as a suspected communist and was prevented from working in Hollywood. In 1952 Chaplin learned that he would be arrested if he ever returned to America.

He would be subjected to questions about his “political views and moral behavior before being allowed to re-enter” the United States (US). Thereafter Chaplin and his family settled in Switzerland. He returned to the US once in 1972 to accept a special Oscar at an Academy Awards ceremony.
