One of the most interesting differences I’ve noticed between American and Indian cultures is that American culture often centers the family on the immediate family: parents and children. Indian culture, on the other hand, extends that to the grandparents and sometimes aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

This leads to an interesting dilemma for the American family: who does the mother leave her children with when they don’t get a lot of time around extended family? Whether it’s extended family or a daycare, the child will scream and cry for mother at least the first week when left without her.

This doesn’t happen in India. In India, when a parent needs a babysitter, they turn to the extended family because the children get more time with the extended family.
