Bandicoots live only in Australia and New Guinea. I have seen reports from seven to twenty species but I think seven species is more accurate and I believe it describes the number of surviving species. This number comes from Bush Heritage Australia, a non-profit organization working to protect Australian native species.

Two species, the Long-nosed Bandicoot and the Northern Brown Bandicoot are living on reserves managed by Bush Heritage Australia. Two additional species, the Golden Bandicoot and the Eastern Barred Bandicoot are threatened but being managed by Bush Heritage Australia in partnerships.
