By listening to your grade school teachers, you may believe a noun is just a person, place, or thing. While this is true to an extent, it doesn't cover everything you need to know. Common nouns are what your teacher would have been referring to: car, girl, toaster, chair. If you notice, none of those were plural and that's because plural nouns are a bit different. With many, you can simply add an '-s' but for others, you may have to add an '-es' or change the spelling of the word.

Proper nouns designate a specific noun—the name of a person, place, or thing: Betsy, Greece, or Chevy. Possessive nouns show the noun's ownership of something else. Sarah's car would be the correct for one noun showing possession while an airplanes' wings would be plural possessive. Finally, collective nouns describe a group of something like the team or family.
