To insert code brackets manually into Word, you need to press the CONTROL and F9 keys at the same time. This is the first thing you do before typing the code itself into the field you’re manually inserting the code into (if that makes sense). However, you have to make sure that you’re in the right field. If you’re not in the right field before you type your code, you could end up messing something up so badly you can’t fix it.

The code brackets are important to any code you’ll be typing, though. This is because it sets the code off from other codes in the document. Without brackets, the code you’re manually inserting would be read as gibberish or part of another code.
