Map Questions and Answers (Q&A)

This is a difficult question to answer without knowing specifying a type of map, and what is meant by "wacky". There are some maps of the world that look very different from each other based on the perspective of the map maker.

Because the earth is a globe, transferring landscapes onto two-dimensional paper is tricky and can lead to some very distorted looking maps. Some people say that the traditional maps of the world we typically see are actually very misrepresentative of the world as a whole.

World War I and World War II had significant impacts on the way countries are split up and named. Even today, these wars are changing the way the world map looks. Most of the major changes happened in Europe, but implications were felt all over the world.

Almost every country in the world was impacted by World War I and World II, if not directly, than indirectly through changes in foreign policy decisions. The current instability in the Middle East can be directly attirubuted to World War II and we may see changes in maps in Israel, Palastine, and the West Bank.

In school, you may have to take a geography class. You may have to look at maps. Schools use two different types of maps, including the topographic maps and the geologic maps. They are very different. They may look a little alike. The geologic map will be more colorful than the topographic map. Topographic maps show elevation of an area using different shades or thicknesses of lines.

Geologic maps show the types of land and soil that are in that area. If you were looking at the various rocks in the area, you would use a geologic map and not a topographic map. If you wanted to find out how far the land is above sea level, you would use a topographic map.

I think the main reason why Britishers are credited with being responsible for modern mapping technology is because of the work of Roger Tomlinson. Roger Tomlinson was born in the United Kingdom and became a respected geographer.

He was primarily responsible for combining large data with geography and became known as the father of Geographic Information Systems, or GIS. GIS is the primary tool for modern mapping technology today.

The reason why it is hard to make a map of the world is because it is hard to make a round shape perfectly flat. Just think of it this way: When you draw a map of North America, you do it in a flat sheet of paper. Although you try to make the area bigger, it is still considered as small as opposed to the actual size of North America.

Also, since Earth is a sphere, when you draw a map on a sheet of paper you tend make the area distorted or stretched. Hence, you won’t be able to make an accurate drawing of a map. Take note of this: Greenland is made to appear as the same size as Africa, but in reality Africa is way larger than Greenland.
