Polaris is a star in the sky. It is considered to be the brightest star in the sky. Sometimes, people refer to this star as North Star, Pole Star and Alpha Ursae Minoris. It is in the constellation of Ursa Minor. Many stars are located in the same constellations so that made it easier for explorers to find direction instead of using a compass. The Polaris star is located straight over the North Pole.
With this information, you can determine the latitude. So, if you were to look up from the North Pole, you would see the Polaris star. The Polaris star can be seen on the horizon when you stand somewhere on the equator. If you see Polaris straight above you, you would at 90 degrees.

The lines of latitude are called parallels or also commonly referred to as the parallels of latitude. It is formed by the circles found on the globe which is parallel to the Earth’s equator and are equally spaced within the 90 degrees from North (with positive degrees of latitude) and South (with negative degrees of latitude).
There are five major parallels of latitude from north to south and these are as follows: The equator with a parallel of 0° because this is where the parallels of latitude begins, Tropic Cancer with a parallel of 23°27’ N, Arctic Circle with a parallel of 66°33’ N, Tropic of Capricorn with a parallel of 23°27’ S and Antarctic Circle with a parallel of 66°33’ S.
