The prothrombin time is a valuable blood test that determines the amount time it takes for the blood to coagulate. It is determined by the prothrombin formation in the blood, as all other factors are supplied to ensure that they are not deficient. It particularly checks the time taken for prothrombin activation, as this is the limiting factor in coagulation.

The time is often increased in response to oral anticoagulant drugs. These drugs act on the clotting factors and prevent their activation, delaying coagulation. Often this is of value in coagulation disorders such as atrial fibrillation, where the tendency to form clots is increased by several folds.
