Mental Health Questions and Answers (Q&A)

Have you ever gone through a situation where you just entered into your kitchen for some work and suddenly you forgot for what purpose you visited that place? Or you are searching for your phone everywhere in your house and that phone is in your pocket. Worst case, you even fail to recall your friend’s name during a conversation.

All these things happen due to memory lapses and it can happen at any age. This can also be a sign of early dementia and can increase the risk of dementia. There are a lot of ways to keep your mind active and sharp. Here, I have enlisted some of the strategies which can protect and improve our memory to some extent.

Have a look at some of the ways to sharpen our brain:

  • Meditate on a regular basis: One of the best ways to protect and strengthen your brain is to meditate on a regular basis. We are not saying that you need to spend all your time on it. You can just meditate for about 15 to 20 minutes.

  • Prefer to eat a healthy diet: Do you know that our brain plays an important role to store our memories when we age? Eating unhealthy food can damage our brain vessels and thinking capability. You should try to avoid saturated and trans fats in your diet.

  • Practice for cognitive training exercises: Start playing brain games like chess, sudoku, quizzes, to stimulate your thinking along with hand-eye coordination. Doing this will definitely sharpen your mind.

  • Be a good listener: Learn to listen to other people. How can it help you? Listeners on average are smarter than people who keep speaking all the time. Listening can give you a new perspective on things and will make you think on that perspective making you sharper.

  • Sleep well: Sleep deprivation can affect your mental ability, degrade your thinking capability and spoil your communication skills. It’s better to have proper sleep averaging 7 to 8 hours. You can take small naps if you have some emergency and you have not taken a proper sleep. Don’t make it daily habit though.

A person whose mind is not healthy may have trouble coping with life’s everyday stresses. For example, there are some people who can barely do work because of their anxiety. They feel that everything is bound to go wrong even if nothing is happening yet. There are some who never leave their homes at all because of what they are experiencing.

People with mental illnesses will also have trouble keeping relationships with other people especially if their reason for developing mental illness is because they have been hurt before. Take note though that having poor physical health can lead people to become more prone to mental health issues and vice versa.

Have you ever imagined that what does it really like to be in a coma? Some of you may think that being in a coma is like being dead. That means you can’t feel anything, your senses don’t work properly.

There are much more exciting things about coma which you should know before reaching any conclusion.

After many studies and surveys, neurologists have concluded that “Coma is like a deep sleep where someone in a coma will be unable to respond to light, voice, verbal communication”. They are incapable of initiating any action. After conducting a survey with the patients who recovered from this trauma, neurologists found that these people can’t remember much of what happened during the time interval when they were in a coma. Their memories were totally foggy.

However, they were able to recall dreams of their families surrounding with them with love and support. And let me tell you one thing that waking up from a coma is somehow exactly like waking up from dreams where you don’t remember what happened in your surroundings. And at the end of the day, you are left with vague memories of the things you have dreamt.

There are a lot of people with mental illness who never wished that they would have the illness that they have. They have the will to live and in order to continue with their lives but therapy to help them heal just cost a large amount of money. One counseling session can cost from $50 - $200 depending on the therapist that will be chosen. Not all people have this amount, especially for regular sessions.

Some insurance policies actually cover mental therapy but there are also some who don’t. It is best to check this first so you will know your possible options. The charge is usually high because therapists can also be very stressed because of the situations that they hear from people. They absorb the negative energy that their patients provide.

Unexplained or overwhelming sadness can be a symptom of depression. Such events that might perpetuate depression could be a major loss, major life changes, stress or hormone imbalances. For those who experience profound sadness or hopelessness, you may have to speak with a professional or take something.

Exercising might be helpful. Adjusting your diet to include more nutritious foods can help with your energy and help you to maintain normal blood sugar levels, which can stabilize your mood. You might also try to keep a journal to record how you are feeling, which will help you to sort things out better. As far as hope goes, there is always hope if you are willing to try.

There are so many possible reasons why people develop mental illness but these are some of the most common: childhood abuse. Those who are abused at an early age may sometimes find ways to cope by becoming a sadist towards animals and other people or by retreating and just trying to make himself/herself invisible.

Loneliness is another reason for mental illness. It is true that no man is an island. People who are unable to speak about their emotions with anyone may feel more lonely than others to the point that they may become mentally ill. Another sign of mental illness is long-term stress. Those who have experienced stress for a long period of time may start to experience hallucinations just to endure the feelings of stress they are going through.
