Narrator:
Welcome to Sociology class and I am professor Wedlow. Today, we have an interesting topic about individuality in social context. Now, did you know that according to studies or shall I say evidence, most of the social forces that are affecting human behaviors were based from the study of suicide? Before I'll entertain your queries, let us think deeply for a moment and ask this to ourselves. What could be a more personal choice than taking one's own life? In addition to that, while you are thinking and analyzing this reality, a study made by Emile Durkheim indicated that our social statuses also affect the level or the tendency of doing so. I mean, committing suicide. That was so when most of the suicidal individuals are coming from but not limited to Protestants, unmarried, wealthy people and well, men in particular. She noted that, women are less likely to take their own lives, also married people, poor, Catholic and Jews.

Narrator:
Settle now so we can talk about your homework. Town crier or the so called bellman is a court officer whose job is to make public pronouncements, well that is required by the court. Way back then, he is the one that shouts announcements in the streets. Just like during our times, messages and announcements in the community were sent through the town crier unlike today that we have cellphones, letters, internet etc. Now you might be wondering if the town crier used megaphone or microphone before I would say no because there were no megaphones and microphones at that time. So, how did he get the people's attention? The town crier uses a gong that he beats very hard so the people would hear it. Or sometimes, they carry a hand bell while shouting "Hear ye". That is his way to get the community's attention and for them to be silent.

NARRATOR:
There are five hierarchies of needs according to Maslow. First is physiological, second is safety and security, third is love and belonging, fourth is esteem needs and fifth is self-actualization which is our topic today. This system of classifying human needs is called Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. According to Maslow's study, a self-actualized person has realistic perceptions, spontaneous, independent, has the concern for problem solving and appreciates simple things. It means that, if you are a fulfilled person, if you are able to achieve all your needs that will lead you to self-actualization. Your desire increases as you fulfill each of them. So once you achieved all the four needs you go forward or you level up, becoming what you can become or doing more than what you can normally do. That is why he said that according to his observations, aside from what I mentioned earlier, self-actualized people are creative too, get the idea?
Question:
Why did the professor say this: "Get the idea?"
To make sure she is on the track
To know if she needs to give more examples
To make sure her students are listening
To ensure that she is clear
