### Introduction to 3rd Grade Math Standards

In Grade 3, students start to emerge from a world of just addition and subtraction and take off with the introduction of multiplication, division, and fractions. The foundation of a lot of important skills is taught in 3rd Grade so it is critical that students mastery each component. 4 Critical Areas in Grade 3 Mathematics: Develop an Understanding of Multiplication and Division strategies within 100. Develop an understanding of Fractions, most importantly Unit Fractions. Understanding the structure of rectangular Arrays and Area. Being able to describe and analyze Two-Dimensional Shapes based on their Attributes.

### Series 1: Place Value and Rounding

Overview:

This first series focuses on the importance of place value and value, as well as the difference between the two. In addition, we will cover the topic of rounding. This is students' first encounter with rounding to the nearest 10s and 100s place and it can be a bit challenging for some. Our lessons offer multiple strategies including number lines and place value, to ensure that your student finds the one that fits his/her needs.

Lessons:

• Lesson 1: Place Value vs. Value
• Lesson 2: Rounding to the Nearest Ten and Hundred
• Lesson 3: Determining Unknown Original Numbers

Series Resources:

Overview:

In Grade 3, students are required to fluently add and subtract within 1,000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. The lessons in this section will provide multiple strategies for students to use while building their addition fluency.

Lessons:

• Lesson 1: Properties of Addition
• Commutative, Associative, Distributive, Identity
• Lesson 2: Estimating a Sum
• Lesson 3: Using Addition Models
• Lesson 4: Addition using the Break Apart Method
• Lesson 5: Addition using Number Lines and Mental Math
• Lesson 6: Addition using Regrouping

### Series 3: Subtraction Strategies

Overview:

In Grade 3, students are required to fluently add and subtract within 1,000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. The lessons in this section will provide multiple strategies for students to use while building their subtraction fluency, including a lesson just for the dreaded...subtraction across zeros!

Lessons:

• Lesson 1: Estimating the Difference
• Lesson 2: Subtraction Models
• Lesson 3: Subtraction: Number Lines and Mental Math
• Lesson 4: Subtraction: Regrouping
• Lesson 5: Subtraction Across Zeros
