In Grade 3, students start to emerge from a world of just addition and subtraction and take off with the introduction of multiplication, division, and fractions. The foundation of a lot of important skills is taught in 3rd Grade so it is critical that students master each component.  4 Critical Areas in Grade 3 Mathematics: Develop an Understanding of Multiplication and Division strategies within 100. Develop an understanding of Fractions, most importantly Unit Fractions.  Understanding the structure of rectangular Arrays and Area.   Being able to describe and analyze Two-Dimensional Shapes based on their Attributes.

Table of Contents

Series 1: Place Value and Rounding

Overview:

This first series focuses on the importance of place value and value, as well as the difference between the two. In addition, we will cover the topic of rounding. This is students' first encounter with rounding to the nearest 10s and 100s place and it can be a bit challenging for some. Our lessons offer multiple strategies including number lines and place value, to ensure that your student finds the one that fits his/her needs.

Lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Place Value vs. Value
  • Lesson 2: Rounding to the Nearest Ten and Hundred
  • Lesson 3: Determining Unknown Original Numbers

Series Resources:

Series 2: Addition Strategies

Overview:

In Grade 3, students are required to fluently add and subtract within 1,000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. The lessons in this section will provide multiple strategies for students to use while building their addition fluency.

Lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Properties of Addition
    • Commutative, Associative, Distributive, Identity
  • Lesson 2: Estimating a Sum
  • Lesson 3: Using Addition Models
  • Lesson 4: Addition using the Break Apart Method
  • Lesson 5: Addition using Number Lines and Mental Math
  • Lesson 6: Addition using Regrouping

Series 6: Problem Solving

Overview:

This series begins by focusing on the most important part of problem solving: Keywords. Students need to have a strong understanding of which term is associated with which operation. That lesson is followed by a detailed explanation of the CUBES Method, a strategy that helps students focus on the important aspects of each world problem. This Method is used throughout all of the United 4 Math grade level series and is an excellent way for students to get comfortable working on word problems.

The remaining lessons are more content specific in regards to 3rd Grade, focusing mainly on problem solving with Multiplication and Division, writing Equations with Variables, using Inverse Operations, and understanding the Order of Operations. Our final lesson in this series explains 2-Step Word Problems. This is where students will need to decifer word problems with multiple operations.

Lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Keywords for Problem Solving
  • Lesson 2: CUBES Method for Problem Solving
  • Lesson 3: Writing Equations with Variables
  • Lesson 4: Inverse Operations: Finding Unknowns
  • Lesson 5: Problem Solving: Multiplication and Division
  • Lesson 6: Order of Operations
  • Lesson 7: 2-Step Word Problems

Series 4: Multiplication

Overview:

Grade 3 is where students get their first real taste of multiplication. This is where they build the foundation of their multiplication skills by focusing on the process and obtaining fact fluency. Taking the time to allow students to build an understanding of what multiplication is and how we reach different products, will help make the process more concrete and prepare them for future interactions with more complex multiplication.

This series will begin by introducing the parts of a multiplication problem and explain how to interpret products of whole numbers as groups of objects, or objects in each group. Then we will move into the multiple strategies to multiply including inverse operations, properties of multiplication, equal groups, arrays, drawings, and equations. These strategies will allow students to fluently multiply within 100, by the end of third grade.

We conclude with strategies for basic facts so that students can build fact fluency, and multiplying one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10.

Whew! That's A LOT! Don't worry - you got this!

Lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Multiplication: Equal Groups
  • Lesson 2: Multiplication: Repeated Addition
  • Lesson 3: Multiplication: Skip-Counting & Number Lines
  • Lesson 4: Multiplication: Arrays
  • Lesson 5: Models for Multiplication
  • Lesson 6: Properties of Multiplication: Commutative, Associative, Zero & Identity
  • Lesson 7: Distributive Property
  • Lesson 8: Strategies for Basic Facts
  • Lesson 9: Multiples of 10
