### Series 2: Order of Operations

Overview:

\r\n\r\n

Series 2 focuses on the Order of Operations, which is the correct Sequence to solve Multi-Step/Multi-Operational Problems. This will include how to use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions and how to know which operation to solve first. If problems are solved out of sequence, students will not find the correct answers. Our lesson provides several examples of this skill so you can walk away with a great understanding.

\r\n\r\n

Once students are comfortable using the Order of Operations, they will apply their new sequencing knowledge when Evaluating Errors in problems that have already been completed, and when learning to Write and Interpret Expressions from word problems.

• Lesson 1: Order of Operations: PEMDAS
• \r\n
• Lesson 2: Evaluating Errors using the Order of Operations

### Series 3: Division

Overview:

In Grade 5, students are required to find quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and the relationship between multiplication and division. They also need to be able to illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. Students should be familiar with most of these strategies from Grade 4, with the exception of long division which is introduced in 5th Grade.

Lessons:

• Lesson 1: Division using Partial Quotient - Repeated Subtraction
• Lesson 2: Division using Compatible Numbers
• Lesson 3: Division using the Distributive Property
• Lesson 4: Long Division

### Series 1: Multi-Digit Multiplication

Overview:

Until this point, students have been gradually learning how to Multiply Multi-Digit Numbers using partial products, area/array models, and place value strategies. When they enter 5th grade, students should have a thorough understanding of the multiplication process and are ready to learn the Standard Algorithm to fluently multiply multi-digit numbers.

This series will explain the steps of the standard algorithm and how to find an unknown factor in a multiplication equation.

Lessons:

• Lesson 1: Multiplication using the Standard Algorithm
• Lesson 2: Determine the Unknown Factor in a Multiplication Equation

### Series 4: Place Value

Overview:

\r\n\r\n

Place Value gets a bit more complex in 5th Grade as students build on their previous knowledge about this concept. Students will need to recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place value to its right, and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. In addition, students must also describe the pattern in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying and dividing by the Power of 10.

\r\n\r\n

Lessons:

\r\n\r\n
\r\n
• Lesson 1: Comparing Values of Adjacent Place Values 1/10 x 10
• \r\n
• Lesson 2: Comparing Values Across Multiple Place Values
• \r\n
• Lesson 3: Patterns in Zeros with Power of 10
• \r\n
• Lesson 4: Decimals when Divided by 10
• \r\n
• Lesson 5: Whole Number Exponents with Power of 10
• \r\n
