Introduction to 4th Grade Math Standards

Grade 4 is where we see a huge shift in the rigor of the academic expectations for students. Instead of just completing computation problems, students need to apply their knowledge of different mathematical concepts across the entire curriculum.

Series 1: Place Value

Overview:

This series focuses on reading and writing multi-digit whole numbers using different forms, including base-ten numerals (standard form), number names (word form), and expanded form. It also assists in recognizing the difference between value and place value and utilizing that knowledge to compare multi-digit whole numbers and the values within them.

Lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Place Value vs. Value
  • Lesson 2: Number Forms: Standard, Word, and Expanded Forms
  • Lesson 3: Comparing Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
  • Lesson 4: Comparing Values of Different Digits

Series 2: Rounding

Overview:

Students in Grade 4 will use their understanding of place value to Round multi-digit whole numbers to any place value. The lessons in this series will explain the process of rounding using place value and how to find original numbers for one that has already been rounded. For students who struggle with identifying the different place values, use a place value chart to help guide them. This way they are focused on the process of rounding instead of which place value is which?

Lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Rounding to Any Place Value
  • Lesson 2: Finding Unknown Original Numbers

Series 3: Addition & Subtraction

Overview:

In prior grade levels, students have utilized multiple strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. In Grade 4, students focus on utilizing the standard algorithm to fluently add and subtract multi-digit numbers. This traditional method is also called Regrouping.

Lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Addition with Regrouping
  • Lesson 2: Subtraction with Regrouping
  • Lesson 3: Subtraction Across Zeros
  • Lesson 4: Find the Missing Digit in an Addition Problem
  • Lesson 5: Find the Missing Digit in a Subtraction Problem
