FOPC™-Fellowship in Opthomology Coding
The objective of the FOPC™ – Fellowship in Ophthalmology Coding is to develop advanced expertise in Ophthalmology Medical Coding, surgical documentation analysis, and specialty reimbursement compliance.
By the end of this fellowship, participants will be able to:
Interpret and apply Ophthalmology CPT® codes (92002–92499) accurately
Differentiate between Eye Visit Codes and E/M Services appropriately
Assign correct ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes with laterality specificity
Code complex procedures including Cataract Surgery, Glaucoma Surgery, and Retinal Procedures
Apply proper CPT® Modifiers (24, 25, 57, 79, RT, LT) in ophthalmology scenarios
Understand and implement Global Surgical Package rules
Code ophthalmic Diagnostic Tests (OCT, Visual Fields, Fundus Photography) correctly
Ensure compliance with NCCI Edits and bundling regulations
Validate documentation for medical necessity and audit defensibility
Prevent common ophthalmology coding errors including overcoding and improper unbundling
Analyze operative reports for accurate surgical code assignment
Strengthen compliance readiness in specialty eye care practices
This fellowship is designed to elevate professionals into Ophthalmology Coding Specialists with strong surgical, diagnostic, and compliance proficiency.
CPT® codes 65800–66030 are used to report surgical and laser procedures performed in the anterior chamber of the eye. These procedures address diseases and abnormalities affecting the fluid-filled space between the cornea and the iris, which plays a crucial role in intraocular pressure regulation and visual function.
Accurate coding in this section requires:
Strong anatomic knowledge of the anterior segment
Clear understanding of disease processes affecting the anterior chamber
Proper application of the “separate procedure” concept
The anterior chamber is part of the anterior segment and includes:
Aqueous humor
Iris surface
Angle structures
Adjacent corneal and iris interfaces
Diseases affecting this space often involve:
Adhesions (synechiae)
Inflammatory debris
Abnormal aqueous flow
Secondary glaucoma-related pathology
Examples of Incision procedures include 65800 for paracentesis of anterior chamber of eye (separate procedure); with removal of aqueous, and 65820 for goniotomy. The purpose of a goniotomy is to clear the obstruction to aqueous outflow from the eye, which in turn lowers the intraocular pressure (IOP).
Examples of Removal procedures include 65900 for removal of epithelial downgrowth, anterior chamber of eye and 65930 for removal of blood clot, anterior segment of eye.
Examples of Introduction procedures include 66020 for injection, anterior chamber of eye (separate procedure); air or liquid. Report 66030 for injection, anterior chamber of eye (separate procedure); medication.
