What is an EKG and what does an EKG technician do?
 
An electrocardiogram (EKG) is a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart. The test records the heart's rhythm and activity on a graph, called an EKG tracing, which is then interpreted by a healthcare provider to diagnose heart conditions and monitor treatment.
 
An EKG Technician is a healthcare professional who performs EKG tests and prepares EKG tracings for interpretation. The technician's responsibilities include preparing the patient for the test, attaching electrodes to the patient's chest, arms, and legs, operating the EKG machine, and ensuring the quality of the EKG tracing. EKG Technicians may also be responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting EKG equipment and for communicating test results to physicians. In some cases, EKG Technicians may also be trained to perform holter monitoring, stress tests, and other types of cardiac diagnostic tests.
