Demystifying the Pelvic Floor: This course is designed for physical therapists and physical therapy assistants with a beginner to intermediate level of experience treating female patients in an orthopedic setting. The focus of the course is to highlight the relationship between the pelvic floor muscles, the pelvic ligaments, the bony anatomy of the pelvic girdle, the hip joints and the thoracic, lumbar and sacral spine and how these relationship present themselves orthopedically. Often there is some mystery about what a pelvic floor specialist does differently from an orthopedic therapist and this course will help to shed some light on what some of those commonalities and differences are. By the end of this course, the confusion of how the pelvic floor may relate to back pain, LE radicular pain, hip dysfunction, SIJD, among other issues, will be more clear.The course will begin with some basic anatomy of the pelvic girdle and pelvic floor. There will be a discussion of common diagnoses directly related to pelvic floor dysfunction and how these issues may complicate orthopedic conditions. The course will highlight some external approaches to the assessment of the pelvic floor/pelvic girdle via videos, pictures and descriptions and we will conclude with case studies to help tie some of these concepts together.
