COPPA Enforcement: Lessons Learned from Yelp, TinyCo, and Past FTC Cases - COURSE 5Presented by Shai Samet of the kidSAFE Seal ProgramIn 2014, the Federal Trade Commission stepped up its enforcement of COPPA by imposing large fines and settlement decrees on Yelp and TinyCo for alleged COPPA violations.  These cases brought the total number of FTC COPPA lawsuits to date to 22 and over $9M in fines. Previous victims have included big brands, such as Playdom (owned by Disney), Universal Music, and Hershey Foods.  But many smaller companies, including several promising startups, have also been hit with penalties, in some cases crippling their business or chance of long-term success.  And the threat of enforcement continues till this day, especially with ongoing news reports and FTC warning letters suggesting many top brands are not compliant.So, what can you do to stay protected?  Are you even a target and should you be concerned?  Can any lessons be learned from past FTC cases?  Do they have anything in common or reveal key areas of weakness?  And, most importantly, what steps can you take now to mitigate your risks?In this course, kidSAFE Founder Shai Samet provides a practical breakdown of the various COPPA cases brought over the years and extrapolate key lessons learned, as well as points to areas of compliance that should be prioritized.  Shai will also present illustrations of the pitfalls made by the companies sued, so participants can visualize the making of a potential COPPA lawsuit.
