Background:  Dietitians who are registered in New Zealand or the College of Dietitians of Ontario (CDO), Canada, and who wish to apply for mutual recognition to gain APD status in Australia are required to complete a specialised reading program on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and complete an assessment of their knowledge. 
 
Aim: To ensure dietitians working in Australia have an acceptable level of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural competency prior to commencement of their work.
 
Objectives:
  1. To have a broad understanding of Australian history and the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Communities.
  2. To understand what is meant by cultural awareness with respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and be aware of the skills required for communicating in a culturally respectful way.
  3. To gain a working knowledge of the nutrition issues and diet related diseases impacting on the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the government plans in place to address health issues in this population.
