In McCann v UK there was a violation of the right to life protected by Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights when a vulnerable prisoner, through lack of supervision, committed suicide in his prison cell, despite the prison authority’s knowledge that he posed a suicide risk.
In Pretty v UK the European Court of Human Rights reasoned that if an individual can take their own life, the state should not prosecute another individual for assisting in a person’s suicide. Therefore, Article 2 protects not only the right to life, but also the right to choose when to end one’s own life.
In Edwards v UK there was a violation of the right to life when the applicant’s son was murdered after being placed in a cell with a dangerous cellmate who posed a real and serious risk.
In McCann v UK the European Court of Human Rights considered the military operation carried out by the SAS to be effective and well organised. As such there was no violation of Article 2 by the United Kingdom authorities when the terrorist suspects were shot at the scene
