What is Maine sexual harassment training?
It is a mandatory sexual harassment training for the state of Maine. In 1991, Maine became the first state in the U.S. to require such training. The training is based on laws that require sexual harassment training for all employees and supervisors. It is intended to equip employees and supervisors in Maine with the knowledge to identify and prevent sexual harassment in the workplace and help create a harassment-free workplace.
Who needs to take Maine sexual harassment training?
All employees and supervisors working in Maine must undergo sexual harassment prevention training. Employers with 15 or more employees are required by laws to provide training to supervisors and employees within one year of them assuming office. Those who need to establish a proper code of conduct in their organizations and prevent unwanted cases of sexual harassment will find this training particularly helpful.
What are the new Maine sexual harassment laws?
Following the #metoo movement, the Maine Human Rights Act was amended recently to add a new requirement pertaining to sexual harassment training. Employers who need to deploy the training must now use a checklist prepared by the Maine Department of Labor (MDOL) to develop training programs. Maine employers must maintain a record of the training for at least three years and it must be made available to the MDOL upon request. All this is aimed at ensuring that organizations go beyond mere compliance and bring real change in the workplace culture.
