If you are in Manhattan, you must have visited the Paley Park, which is a small vest-pocket park. This is where Stork Club nightclub was located from 1929 to 1965. The building was demolished in 1966. The club was owned and operated by an ex-bootlegger called Sherman Billingsley who came to New York from Oklahoma. The Stork Club was very famous in the 1960s and very many movie stars, showgirls, aristocrats and celebrities mixed here.

There were other nightclubs in New York that had sophistication and drew the sporting crowd, but they couldn’t match Stock Club that had a mix of money, glamour and power. Did you know that one of the first Stork Club customers was a writer called Heywood Broun? On Broun’s first visit to Stork Club he mistook it to be a funeral home! Did you know that Billingsley was an extravagant who spent up to $100,000 a year on his favorite patrons?
