Among the throngs of those descending upon Austin, TX every year, you will find a defined subset of the general US population- Geeks. However, not every Geek is built the same. Here, we examine 5 different and distinct types of Geeks. Which one are YOU?

    How did you Score your Tickets and Trip to SXSW?

      Are you Kidding? With this money maker and my natural schmoozing skills, my company recognized there's no way they can afford NOT to send me

      I ate only ramen noodles for an entire month to afford this trip. Let's hope it pays off and I land a job

      My parents paid for me. It's the least they could do for subjecting me to their bourgeois attitudes towards life for 25 years...

      I sold one of my Mint Condition Original Series Battlestar Galactica Starbuck action figures at Comic-Con last year. No biggie, I've got like a zillion....

    What do you plan to wear on Day 2 of the Conference?

      My brand new interview suit- minus a tie of course. Don't want to seem desperate (even though I am.... Soooo...desperate...)

      Vintage-Feel Nerdy tee (not really vintage- gotta be American Apparel so it hugs my waifish frame just right), skinny jeans (dark denim- dressing up), and a satchel.

      Day 2, Casual Day... Graphic Tee V-Neck, sports jacket, my Sperrys, and my sunglasses. On a chain around my neck. Just in case it gets really sunny in there...

      Whichever sweat pants are on top of my suitcase and my Wolf-at-Night t-shirt. Badass.

      What do I wear? Who cares as long as I have my iPhone for tweeting and a notebook capable of holding all the copious notes I will take (but I will definitely look super cute, let's be real)

    What Keynote Speaker/Seminar are you most excited to attend?

      The panel with the top game developers from Blizzard and Will Wright- gotta start planning which games I'm gonna play on vacation next summer....

      Yea, I'll leave the seminar going and such to the media guys. That's not my function. I'm here to entertain

      I'm keeping my schedule flexible- I need to be able to keep an eye on where my best prospects are heading and make sure to appear interested in the same topics...

      The underground, sub-SXSW ones- you probably haven't heard of them.

      Although the line-up hasn't officially been announced for 2013, I am very eager to attend anything that speaks to the convergence of great UX, evolving consumer behavior, and emerging technology

    It's 1am the first night of South By- where are you?

      Anxiously refreshing my Twitter to find out where the guys from R/GA are hanging out- I heard they just won a new account and might be hiring...

      Found me a LAN party- totally plugged in right now.

      Snuck over to the film festival for a late-night screening of this indie documentary I heard of on this grass-roots blog about the plight of...well, I don't remember, but there was definitely a plight of some sort. Powerful.

      Winding down at a totally reasonable media soiree- saying good night to all the great new connections I've made across the country, handing my business card to several reps for emerging media companies in order to review their offerings upon my return and, if relevant, set-up a lunch n' learn for the rest of the department.

      I dunno...attend some gaming seminars...give my mom some space- she's been so distant lately...

      Learn as much in only 5 days in Austin as it would probably take me an entire year to learn in Atlanta, bring that knowledge back to 22 and use it to create kick-ass strategies and help my teammates grow their knowledge base and curiosity about digital and social

      Sasquatch Festival.

      Comic-Con 2012 (and 2000-2011 as well)

      Errr... Dragon Con (Sometimes I can be a geeky geek as well...)

    As soon as you return from SXSW, what do you intend to do?
    • A. 

      Call in sick to work. Gotta recover. The other guys can handle the work.

    • B. 

      I think that band that played that one song in the background of that one totally underground movie is playing at that music venue down the street that doesn't even look like a music venue FROM the street the day I get back

      That'll be right around the time to put the finishing touches on my Warlock costume for my 2013 convention schedule

      Send a personalized cover sheet, resume, and headshot to every single business card I was able to collect. Gotta cast a wide net.

      Review all of my notes and Tweets from the festival while they are still fresh in my brain, download and review any especially intriguing presentations that I saw that have been made available on the website, and bookmark the ones that I believe would be especially useful to my coworkers (this list will be cataloged on an entry on my Blog), and start developing the outline for a collaborative presentation to my peers who didn't get to attend but are still eager to learn about what's coming up in digital and social media
