Erase the Red X symbol,enter the appropriate symbol in the symbol block and enter a statement. "Symbol entered in error" in the corrective action block.The corrective action taken and signature will follow this statement as usual.
Enter the statement "Symbol/initial entered in error. discrepancy and correct symbol/initial reentered on page _. item _." In addition, an authorized production inspector will sign off the inspected by block and initial over the symbol.
Corrective action would be "Symbol/initial entered in error - item reentered below''. Sign the "corrected by" block and reenter the discrepancy in the first vacant discrepancy block .
The easiest way to remove a symbol entered in error is to reaccomplish the page of the AFTO Form 781A where the error was made.

Verify accomplishment of corrective action, have work inspected by a person authorized to clear a Red X, sign the "corrected by" block and initial over the symbol.
The technician accomplishing the corrective action signs the "corrected by" block and the authorized production inspector inspects the work,and if properly accomplished, enters his signature in the "inspected by" block and initials over the Red X.
Enter the work accomplished in the "corrective action" block, date and sign the "corrected by" block. If the discrepancy requires an operation check, enter a red dash.
Any one of the above procedures may be used to clear a Red X condition
The aircraft records section since they are charged with the responsibility of maintaining correct records.
Quality Assurance personnel since they represent the Chief of Maintenance and are the most highly qualified personnel.
No one may direct the changing of a symbol on aircraft records since the symbol entered represents the opinions of the person making that entry.
Personnel specifically authorized to clear Red X conditions by proper authority may direct personnel to change status symbols since they are representative of top management on this matter.
When the required repair, inspection,or maintenance is completed.
