    • This course is designed to have you reflect on your approach to youth sports.
    • The course also provides you with information that will help you have a rewarding youth coaching experience.
    • The course will be updated with input from coaches all over the country.
    • Your Certificate of Completion will automatically be e-mailed to you and to the person in charge of coaches education.
    • The research is clear - Children play sports to have FUN and be with their friends. Children stop playing sports because the are not having FUN. This information should guide you as you answer the questions in this course.

    Number 1 How are you going to make youth football fun for the children?

    • Show up with a smile
    • Call each child by their first name
    • Create some complimentary "Nicknames" for the players.
    • Make the drills fun and challenging.
    • Be organized, provide a schedule for practice times and dates for parents.
    • Coach with a positive tone.
    • Demonstrate appropriate levels of intensity
    • The prize box-
    The PRIZE BOX is used to award the "teams" on task behavior. It is a shoe box filled with appropriate prizes, if the children stay on task they reap the rewards at the end of practice, if not they try again next time.Set up your behavior goals before practice. At the end of the game sit the team down and discuss the goals you talked about before the game. Let the children tell you if they met the goals.

    Number 2 Say nice things to parents about their child. Everyone likes to hear nice things about their child. No need to respond to this point, JUST DO IT !! -This will make other conversations easier.

    1. Make your first contact with parents a positive one.
    2. Say nice things about their child as soon as possible.
    3. Realize that parents want to be heard, set up communication opportunities
    4. Keep your cool when being criticized, its part of the job.
    5. Contact parents when you are not going to play a child for a long period of time because of a rule violation.

     Show up with an enthusiatic attitude
    1. Do the right thing all the time
    2. Smile, laugh, and be high energy at practice and games.
    3. Be a bright light at practice/games that makes everyone feel good.
    4. Avoid comments like: "What are you doing?", "Do you want to be here?" "Snap out of it" " Where is your head at today?" These are all passive aggressive comments and are not a positive way to motivate.
    5. Model appropriate behavior at all times.
    6. Understand that children learn from your actions.

    Number 4 Organization is very important at the youth level. What 3 things you will do to make sure you are organized during your season?

    Have a parent meeting before or on the first day of practice
    1. Have handouts that include; contact information, practice dates and times, schedule for games
    2. Create a practice plan before you get to practice
    3. Create your tentative substitution rotation before games
    4. Educate and deligate responsibilities to your staff
    5. Evaluate your practice plans after practice and make changes for the next practice
    6. Discuss your team goals with the parents and players.

    Number 5 It is important that you know the basics of football. How will you learn the basics?

    • Attend a clinic.
    • Contact your local high school coaches.
    • Attend a local high school practice.
    • Search the internet for drills.
    • Seek out veteran coaches.

    Number6 Teach teamwork.  What are 2 ways you will teach children teamwork?

    Teamwork is one of the most important lessons that sports teach.
    1. Examples of teamwork are:working together to improve,  congratulating teammates, encouraging teammates, consoling teammates. When you see children being good teammates this is a teachable moment. Let the team know how pleased you are to see them being great teammates.
    2. The coaching staff can model teamwork by cooperating while coaching.
    3. During drills where players are working together let the team know that this is good teamwork.
    4. Children love to be recognized for doing the right thing.
    5. When the group is not acting the way you want them too, find a child that is listening and say," I like the way Johnny is listening", the others, will get back on task. ( my first and only "Johnny" reference)
    6. Coaches need to demonstrate good teamwork, staffs need to trust and work well together.

    Number 7 Teach sportsmanship. How will you teach sportsmanship?

    Model good sportsmanship as the coach
    1. Play fair
    2. Don't yell at anyone during games, players, referees, parents. Cheer with a positive tone & comments.
    3. Respect everyone
    4. Point out current events that show good and poor sportsmanship
    5. Praise players that show good sportsmanship on your team
    6. Praise players on the other team that show good sportsmanship.

Coaches will keep their voice at appropriate levels when talking to  players, officials or other coaches. 6.) Coaches will enforce playing time rules set by the league. 7.)
