STILL IN DEVELOPMENT. This quiz is for Dungeons and Dragons 4e, specifically on the chapter about combat (although concepts from other chapters may leak in, this is all very interconnected). Comments are appreciated.

Questions and Answers
  • 1.

The combat system in Dungeons and Dragons is breaks combat into sections of time - Encounters, Rounds and Turns.  Just like a day is broken into hours, which are broken into minutes, and then seconds.  Which is the smallest unit, and which is the largest?  For example, again talking about days, the smallest unit is seconds, then minutes, then hours. So that'd be written as "seconds < minutes < hours".

    • A.

      Encounter < round < turn

    • B.

      Turn < encounter < round

    • C.

      Round < turn < encounter

    • D.

      Turn < round < encounter

    • E.

      None of the above

    Correct Answer
    D. Turn < round < encounter
    Explanation
PH 266. All the players/monsters get one turn in a round. A series of rounds comprise an encounter. Multiple encounters comprise a day.

    • E.

      None of the above.

    Correct Answer
    A. Rogue, Ranger, Wizard, Fighter
    Explanation
PH 267. The intelligence modifier is there to throw you off. It's roll + 1/2 level + Dex modifier + other mods. So the Ranger is 16+0+2+0=18. Fighter is 15+2+0+0=17. Rogue is 8+3+3+4=18. Wizard is 8+9+0+0=17. Since there are ties, those with the highest initiative modifiers go first.

What bookkeeping do you perform at the Start of your turn (SOT)?

    • A.

If you're suffering ongoing damage, take the damage.

    • B.

If you have regeneration, you regain hit points.

    • C.

You may make saving throws against any effects that a save can end.

    • D.

    • E.

    Correct Answer(s)
    A. If you're suffering ongoing damage, take the damage.
    B. If you have regeneration, you regain hit points.
    E. If any effect ends at the SOT, end them now.

    • A.

All 3 Areas of Effect are Area attacks

    • B.

The blue is an "Area Burst 1 within 10"

    • C.

    • D.

The green is an "Area Wall 8 within 10"

    • E.

The orange is an "Area Blast 1 within 10"

    Correct Answer(s)
    A. All 3 Areas of Effect are Area attacks
    B. The blue is an "Area Burst 1 within 10"
    C. The orange is an "Area 1 square within 10"
    D. The green is an "Area Wall 8 within 10"
    Explanation
PH 271, 272. The Orange is an Area 1 square within 10, see Cloud of Daggers, PH 159. These are unusual and to my knowledge this is the only example. I like to consider it an Area Burst 0. The green is an Area Wall 8, the caster does not have to create all squares of a wall. It's up to 8 squares, so 6 squares is valid. See PH 162. An Area Blast makes no sense - a blast must be adjacent to the caster, and an Area attack can be non-adjacent.
