As a friar, Francis of Assisi was from Italy and worshipped with Roman Catholics. He was known for being responsible for animals and nature. Francis of Assisi was born into a large family in the late 1100s. His family was fairly wealthy. Francis’s popularity came from his visions. One happened while he was heading off to fight in the early 1200s. Francis of Assisi died in 1226. While he died, he was still reciting Psalms verses. Pope Gregory IX declared Francis of Assisi a saint. His popularity remained even through the next few centuries. In order to honor and remember Francis, October 4th was declared as his day.
