Networking is how computers talk to each other. The internet, which hosts the world wide web, is the largest and most well known network in existence. It is an example of a WAN—a wide area network. The term "wide area" doesn’t have a specific meaning, but is used in contrast to smaller networks such as a LAN—a local area network—or a PAN—a personal area network. The terms MAN, for metropolitan area network, and CAN, for campus area network are also used. LANs are typically confined to one building, or a cluster of related buildings. A PAN links the various devices belonging to a single user, for instance when your cellphone shares information with your tablet or home computer.
