Top Digestive System Flashcards

Digestion is one of the body’s most important functions. Every organism has to take in nutrients and break them down into useful pieces to fuel its growth and movement. In humans, this happens through the digestive system. Human digestion starts in the mouth, where saliva and teeth work together to crunch and crush food into a manageable, liquid form.

The food is then moved to the stomach, which breaks it down even further and begins to extract the nutrients. Finally, the most important step: the intestines, which draw out all the important nutrients and send them to the various parts of the body where they’re needed most. Meanwhile, harmful products are carefully processed in the liver and kidneys to prevent them from damaging the body’s fragile organs. Finally, the remaining waste is released from the body to make room for new food coming in. The digestive system works in harmony with many other parts of the body, such as circulatory and endocrine systems, to keep you healthy and growing throughout your life.
