Biology is the study of living things. It’s the basic science underlying modern medicine as well as all sorts of other scientific disciplines such as environmental science and biopsychology (the biology of human and animal behavior). Biology covers an extremely broad range of topics, from the smallest microscopic bacteria all the way up to giant redwoods and whole ecosystems. Biologists strive to understand how living things work together, how they are all connected within a dizzyingly complex web of relationships.

Despite all that complexity, biology is built out of relatively simple building blocks: just four nucleotides and twenty amino acids, in different combinations, make up the whole of life on earth! Keep that in mind when you’re studying these biology flashcards. There are a lot of terms to keep track of, but every one of them plays a vital role in allowing plants to grow, brains to think, and muscles to move your body around.
