Front Back
The respiratory system is divided
Structurally and Functionally
Structural division-
Lower and upper respiratory system
Upper
Nose pharynx and associated structures
Lower
Larynx, trachea, brochi and lungs
Functional division of the respiratory sytem
Conducting and Respiratory Zone
Conducting Zone is made up of
Nose pharynx. larynx trachea bronchi bronchioles
The conducting zone are lined with the following
Puesdo stratified columnar epithelium serous glands globet cells- secreting mucus Cilia- hair like projections
What part of the respiratory system does gas exchange actually takes place
Alveoli
What is pulmonary ventilation/ breathing
Gas exchange from the external environment to the internal enviroment of the body
Ventilation is controlled by
Respiratory muscles intrapleral pressures elastic properties of the lungs
External respiration
This process involves the the whole process of inhalation and exhalation, moving of gases in and out of the body- across the respiratory membrane respiratory membrane of the alveoli to blood strean to pulmonary veins to heart to sents to the body, cells pick up oxygen, carbon dioxide diffuse out of the tissue into blood stream to the lungs into alveoli and back to environment.
Internal respiration
Exchange of gases between capillaries and tissue cells
The main functions of the parts of the conducting zone
Nose warms the air filters - trapping foreign and harmful particles aided by ciliated cells of nasal mucosa and mucus turbinate bones make turbulence which also aids in removal of particles
Mouth
Passageway for air provides less warm humidification and less protection also
Sinus
Air filles spaces secretions drain to nasal cavity
