What is Plurality?
More votes than any other candidate but not the majority
What is the "Winner-take-all" system?
Custom whereby the candidate that receives the plurality of the vote receives all the electoral votes from that state
What is the inagural address?
A brief speech given by the President at the beginning of a term of office in which he expresses the main points to be fulfilled by his new administration
What is the State of the Union Message?
The Presidents annual message to Congress in which he reports on the condition of the nation and his goals for the coming year
What is protocol?
Code of ceremonial forms and courtesies that is observed by diplomats and heads of state
What are executive orders?
A command by the President or anther executive which has the force of law
What is reprieve?
Postponement of a criminal's sentence
What is pardon?
Legal exoneration for a crime, to release from further punishment for a crime
What does commute mean?
To change a punishment, obligation, etc. to one that is less service
What does amnesty mean?
General pardon issued to a group of persons
What is an agenda?
Issues to be considered in a formal meeting, such as a meeting of a congressional committee, a White House policy meeting, a cabinet meeting, etc.
What is diplomatic recognition?
The recognition by the President of a nation's existence and the legitimacy of it's government
What is a treaty?
A formal agreement between nations: > unilateral: one sided > bilateral: 2 countries signing > multilateral: 3 or more countries signing
What is an executive agreement?
Informal agreement entered into by the President and the leader of a foreign nation or by their representatives
What is a fiscal policy?
Financial policy of a nation or state
