What is ethical subjectivism?
Ethical Subjectivism is the idea that our moral opinions are based on our feelings and nothing more.
According to simple subjectivism is there any such thing as objective moral truths?
No
According to simple subjectivism when someone makes a moral statement then they are only stating what?
They are only stating their feelings. Ex. Homosexuality is wrong. My feelings dissaprove of homosexuality.
What are two weaknesses of simple subjectivism?
1. Simple subjectivism cannot account for disagreement. 2. Simple subjectivism implies that you are always right.
Explain how simple subjectivism cannot account for disagreement.
The argument may be summarized like this: When one person sayes, X is morally unacceptable," and someone else sayes x is right, they are disagreeing. However if simple subjectivism were right, there would be no disagreement between them. Therefore simple subjectivism cannot be right.
How does simple subjectivism account for disagreement?
According to simple subjectivism there is no disagreement between two people; each should acknowledge the truth of what the other is saying.
Explain infallability in simple subjectivism.
So long as someone is honestly reprisenting his or her own feelings then what they say is true.
What is the second stage of subjectivism?
Emotivism
According to emotivism what is the purpose of moral statements?
Moral statements are meant to pursuade. Ex. Homosexuality is wrong. means Dont be homosexual.
How does emotivism make up for simple subjectivism's failure to account for differences?
Moral disagreements in attitude. SS could not explain moral disagreements because once it interpreted moral jusdgements as statements about attitudesk the disagreement vanished. Emotivism dosent have that problem.
How does Emotivism make up for SS(simple subjectivism) implied infallability?
Emotivism doesnt interpret moral judgements as statements that are true or false.
