Front Back
Addressability
The number of bits stored in each addressable location in memory.
Arithmatic logic unit (ALU)
Computer component that performs arithmatic opperations (add, sub, mult, div) and logical opperations (comparison of two values).
Register
Small storage area in the CPU used to store intermidiate values or special data. Part of the ALU
Input unit
A device that accepts data to be stored in memory.Keyboard mouse etc.
Output unit
A device that prints or otherwise displays data stored in memory. Printer Monitor etc.
Control unit
The computer component that controls the actions of the other components so as to execute instructions in sequence.
Instruction register (IR)
The register that contains the instruction currently being executed.
Program counter
The register that contains the the address of the next instruction to be executed.
CPU
Combination of the arithmetic/logic unit and the control unit.
Bus width
The number of bits that can be transfered in parallel over the bus.
Cache memory
A type of small, high speed memory used to holld frequently used data.
Pipelining
A technique that breaks an instruction into smaller steps that can be overlapped. used in the fetch execute cycle.
Motherboard
The main circuitboard of a personal computer.
Track
A concentric circle on the surface of a disk.
Sector
A section of a track.
