Teams have been definied
- as complex, dynamic and adaptive systems
- exist in a context, develop as member interact over time, and evolve and adapt as situational demanads unfold
Work team can be defined as two or more poeple who (1) (2) (3) (4)
(1) interact and share a common goal, such that their tasks are interdependent

(2) are brought together to perform tasks relevant to the organization

(3) have different roles and responsibilities (which, however, may be interchangeable)

(4) are rooted in an overall organizational system that sets constraints on, and provides context for, the team
Some researchers distinguish between TEAMS and GROUPS
- Groups: made up of individuals working on interdependent tasks by not necessarily requiring interdepenent work

- teams: more than a group in that they have a shared goal and vision and great interdependence
Many researchers do not make the distinction and less critical
- many different types of teams exist
Are all teams the same? use sports as an example
- All sports teams goal to won or perform at best
- differ in the content of their activities (bball vball swim)

But do they actually differ on their format? (using sports)
How are they organized (1-4)
- bball, vball etc teams are all teams, variations exist in how they are organized

(1) extent to which the member INTERACT with each other on their individual tasks

(2) the INTERDEPENDENCE of the tasks

(3) the extent to which the roles and tasks are WELL DEFINED and formalized

(4) the extent to which the members are INTERCHANGEABLE

- factors may be internally driven wihtin the group or externally derived baed on restraints put on them by the organization or regulating body
Total team performance is simply the additive function of individual members performance that is _________
