A vast prarie with fertile soil, some settlers became wealthy off cotton others wer less successful -- slavery was established

1821--a missouri merchant who sold American goods to Mexico fro much lower prices than the inferior Mexican goods - one of the people who began the extensive trade with Mexico

Fur trappers - often single white and young
many were closely involved or married with Indian or Mexican women
Had good relationships with Native tribes

1822 Founded the Rocky Mt. Fur Co. -- convinced trappers to move permanently to the Rocky Mts.

Permanent settlements of trappers in the Rocky Mt. Annually supplies were brought by trains in exchange for fur - train arrivals became social events as most fur trappers lived in isolation

Was sent (with 19 soldiers) to explore the Platte and South Platte Rivers - reported that the great plains was "The Great American Desert" convinced ppl not to migrate there
