Front Back
These cells arise in periosteum (postnatally in bone marrow) and are found in periosteum and endosteum
Osteoblasts
Bone-building cells that make and secrete collagen fibers and initiate calcification (appear as cuboidal cells on bone surface)
Osteoblasts
Terminally differentiated osteoblasts trapped by matrix secretion
Osteocytes
Mature bone cells that maintain bone tissue but no longer secrete matrix (appear as small oval cells in lacunae in matrix)
Osteocytes
Derived from fusion of several monocytes and concentrated in endosteum
Osteoclasts
Function in bone resorption (giant multinucleate cells with ruffled border)
Osteoclasts
Bone cells derived from mesenchyme
Osteoblasts and osteocytes
Includes collagen fibers and non-collagenous matrix proteins (1/3 of bone ECM)
Organic components
Provides bone with resilience and bility to resist stretching and twisting (does not resist compression)
Collagen
Contribute to compressive strength of bone
Proteoglycans
Glue bone cells/fibers to mineralized ground substance
Glycoproteins
Unmineralized bone matrix - contains collagen fibers, glycoproteins, proteoglycans
Osteoid
Make up 2/3 of ECM of bone; consist mainly of 2 mineral salts - calcium phosphate and calcium hydroxide
Inorganic components - resistant to compression!
Calcium phosphate and calcium hydroxide interact to produce....
Hydroxyapatite
2 types of glycoproteins: 1) mediates bone cell to matrix attachment 2) links collagen and bone minerals
1) osteopontin 2) osteonectin
