Venus Figurines
Is an umbrella term for a number of prehistoric statues of women sharing common attributes from the Aurignacian or Gravettian period of the upper Palaeolithic, found from Western Europe to Siberia. These items were carved from soft stone, bone or ivory, or formed of clay and fired.
Clovis Culture
Clovis culture is a prehistoric Native American culture that first appears in the archaeological record of North America around 13,500 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. The culture is named for artifacts found near Clovis, New Mexico, where the first evidence of this tool complex was excavated in 1932.
Austronesian migrations
Also called Malayo-Polynesian. a family of languages spoken in the Malay Peninsula, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Madagascar, and Oceania.
Shamans
Shaman is a person regarded as having access to, and influence in, the world of benevolent and malevolent spirits, who typically enters into a trance state during a ritual, and practices divination and healing.
Dreamtime
Dreamtime is the Aboriginal understanding of the world, of it's creation, and it's great stories. The Dreamtime is the beginning of knowledge, from which came the laws of existence. For survival these laws must be observed. The Dreaming world was the old time of the Ancestor Beings.
Megafaunal extinction
A well-known mass extinction of megafauna, the Holocene extinction, occurred at the end of the last ice age glacial period and wiped out many giant ice age animals, such as woolly mammoths, in the Americas and northern Eurasia.
Original affluent society
Is a theory postulated that hunter-gatherers were the original affluent society.
Trance Dance
Trance dance is a ritual where shamans dance as women clap the rhythm and sing special medicine songs. The San believe that these medicine songs are full of a supernatural potency. This potency comes from god himself, but it is also in the stomachs of shamans (medicine people).
Paleolithic settling down
The process by which some Paleolithic peoples moved toward the permanent settlement in the wake of the last Ice Age. Settlement was marked by increasing storage of food and accumulation of goods, as well as growing inequalities in society.
Gobekli Tepe
Oldest religious structure. made by hunter-gatherers Indicates that religion came before the organization of labor, settlement, and agriculture.
