There is diversity in the pronunciations in modern English. Glad has a short sound and the "a" is short but add an "e" to the end like glade, and the "a" becomes long and sounds like it is pronounced. A short vowel is any word that does not allow the vowel within it to generate that vowel's long vowel sound.

The short sound is an unusual sound that needs to be learned. Vowels can be categorized into long and short depending on their placement within the word. A short vowel sound is created when a consonant follows the vowel in a syllable. Short vowels are not pronounced like the name of the vowel.
