Why do our eyes become red in a photograph?

This happens when a photo is taken using a flash mounted directly over the lens of the camera taking the photo and the subjects of the photo are not well lit, and the light from the flash or strobe enters the subjects eye through the pupil, and the red is actually the back of the eye that is captured on the camera's sensor because the light reflects directly to the sensor in the camera and is recorded.
