How is DEAR written up in that code?

In a certain code RAID is written as %#*$, RIPE is written as %*@©.

To crack this code, you merely have to note which symbols stand for individual letters in the examples given. For the word DEAR, you need the symbols for each of the letters it comprises. D = $ in RAID and the word RIPE, E = c) (my keyboard doesn't have the copyright symbol). A = # in RAID and R = % in RIPE. This gives us the four symbols $c)#% to represent the word, DEAR. It is a simple substitution code that would be insufficient for most purposes. That is, too easy to crack to use for encrypting written information.
