There are many different thyroid ailments that a person could possibly get. One is called hyperparathyroidism. This is when the thyroid hormone is made in the thyroid, but too much of it is made and it secretes into the bloodstream.

The thyroid is quite small. These types of thyroid glands are called parathyroid glands. There are two type of the hyperparathyroidism. Primary is when the parathyroid glands are increased in size whereas the secondary means that there are decreases in calcium in the system.

A person who has hyperparathyroidism may experience symptoms such as an increase in sleep and urination, eating less, being weak, being depressed and pain in their bones. If a nurse is told that a patient has these symptoms, she or he should suspect something is wrong with the thyroid.

Hyperparathyroidism-rationale: hyperparathyroidism is most common in older women and is characterized by bone pain and weakness from excess parathyroid hormone. clients also exhibit hypercalciuria-causing polyuria. although clients with diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus have polyuria, they dont have bone pain and increased sleeping. hypoparathyroidism is characterized by urinary frequency rather than by polyuria.client needs category: physiological integrityclient needs subcategory: reduction of risk potentialcognitive level: analysisreference: smeltzer, s.c., et al. brunner and suddarths textbook of medical surgical-nursing, 11th ed. philadelphia: lippincott williams & wilkins, 2008, p. 1471.
