A multi-dose vial is pretty much the way it sounds. It is one medication that comes in liquid form, but it contains two or more types of medicines that can be taken together. On the outside of the vial, there is a label that describes all of the medication that is included in the one bottle.

Only one patient should be allowed to take the multi-dose vial due to it being made specifically for that one patient based on that patient’s medical background and the need for the drugs. When a patient goes into surgery, usually a patient will need to take several different types of medications and they need to be taken fast, so a multi-dose vial of medicine will be given to him or her.

Strength of the medication-rationale: after reconstituting a medication, the nurse should label any unused medication with the strength of the medication and her initials or signature, as well as the date and time of reconstitution. the expiration date on the order is usually written on the medication record. she should write the administration route and prescribers name on the order sheet, not on the label.client needs category: physiological integrityclient needs subcategory: pharmacological and parenteral therapiescognitive level: comprehensionreference: taylor, c., et al. fundamentals of nursing: the art and science of nursing care, 6th ed. philadelphia: lippincott williams & wilkins, 2008, p. 784.
