A hypertonic mixture has a greater concentration of solutes than another solution. A condensed solution outside of a cell is called hypertonic and has more solutes than the cytosol in the interior of the cell.

When immersed in a hypertonic mixture, osmotic pressure tends to force water to run out of the cell in order to stabilize concentrations of the solutes on either side of the cell membrane. The cells often take on the look of a pin cushion.

Hypertonic-rationale: a hypertonic solution causes the bloodstream to absorb fluids until pressure on both sides of the blood vessel is equal. a hypotonic solution causes fluids to move from the bloodstream into the tissues. an isotonic solution has no effect on the cell. depending on the concentration of sodium, a sodium chloride solution can be isotonic, hypertonic, or hypotonic.client needs category: physiological integrityclient needs subcategory: basic care and comfortcognitive level: comprehensionreference: taylor, c., et al. fundamentals of nursing: the art and science of nursing care, 6th ed. philadelphia: lippincott williams & wilkins, 2008, p. 1678.
